Sid Evans passed on to me this video on tarpon research, which I embedded in my last post, and introduced me to Bonefish and Tarpon Trust, a group of conservationists and anglers who are supporting research and policies to ensure the long term well being of these magnificent species, as well as the permit. Dr. Gerry Ault, one of the researchers in the video, notes that recreational fishing in Florida, according to state officials, generates $10 billion per year for Florida's economy, and that makes it larger than Florida's citrus industry. Hard to believe, but there it is. Preserving that part of Florida's industry is one good reason to work hard on the tarpon's behalf, and of course we can all think of others good ones too.
